Hollywood began in 1908, when a few independent New York filmmakers moved west to set up shop. The town’s first full-length motion picture was filmed in 1915.
I took this on a flight from Seattle to Los Angeles on September 11th of this year. There’s nothing quite as original as Hollywood and this famous sign. The amazing thing is that it was clear enough to see it!!!
I’m adding this little bit of history that was inspired by a comment by Kathy below. The sign originally read “HOLLYWOODLAND,” and its purpose was to advertise a new housing development in the hills above the Hollywood district of Los Angeles.

I knew I had heard some history about the sign so I looked it up. It was built in 1923 to advertise a real estate development and originally said “Hollywoodland”. That is a great angle for a picture of it. I love taking picutres from the air.

This is a wonderful photo! I havent ever seen this sign myself…but have been to CA many times…maybe I should get my butt there before an earthquake upsets it and leaves it to say Wood or Holly? My photo is up early, please come and visit soon
