A big thank-you to Happy Momma to Three for my new TT header.
Thirteen Facts about California. This is the state I was born in and that I find myself living in once more…

1. The California Gold Rush began on January 24, 1848, when gold was accidentally discovered at Sutter’s Mill, on the South Fork of the American River in Coloma, near Sacramento.

2. More people live in California than in any other state in the U.S. In 2001, there were more than 34 million.
3. The “Eternal God” is a 12,000-year-old redwood tree in the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. It’s the oldest living thing on the planet, but at 238 feet tall it isn’t the biggest tree. That title belongs to a giant sequoia called “General Sherman” in Sequoia National Park, which tops out at 275 feet and measures more than 102 feet around.

4. San Francisco Originals: blue jeans and fortune cookies.

5. The San Andreas Fault line runs 650 miles up the California coast, marking the collision of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates. Thousands of small earthquakes occur in California every year; historically, a major quake has hit the southern region every 150 years. The last big one hit in 1857. (I guess this source doesn’t consider the last biggest one I experienced, the Sylmar quake in 1971 or the one that caused so much damage, the Northridge quake in 1994)

6. Hollywood began in 1908, when a few independent New York filmmakers moved west to set up shop. The town’s first full-length motion picture was filmed in 1915.

7. East finally met west in 1869, when the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads were connected.
8. The hottest day ever in America was in California’s Death Valley on July 10, 1913. It was a sweltering 135 degrees F!

9. Hewlett-Packard was the first tech company in Silicon Valley. In 1938, Stanford University engineers Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard started it in a garage with $1,538.
10. Los Angeles is moving eastward at an estimated rate of one-fifth of an inch per year.
11. Mel Blanc, the voice behind Bugs Bunny and Porky Pig, is buried in Hollywood Memorial Park. His headstone reads, “That’s all, folks!”
12. Each October, Pacific Grove, California, becomes home to thousands of Monarch butterflies, who travel up to 2,000 miles to winter and mate there. It’s a misdemeanor to harm a Monarch in Pacific Grove since 1939.

13. California’s stint as a republic, after declaring freedom from Mexico on June 14, 1846, lasted one month. It then spent four years as a U.S. territory before officially becoming a state on September 9, 1850.

I’d love to go to California! There’s a lot to see and do.
Thanks for visiting my Tolkien TT!
A 12,000 year old tree? That is simply beyond words. What incredible power…
Thanks for the info on California! I,ve never been!
My T13 is up!
Yay California… this is why I can’t leave! Love the earthquakes (erm.. geology) of this territory… it’s so cool!
Thanks for that list. It’s a long time since I was in California — time to visit again. A tree 12,000 years old just boggles the mind. That means it was already 7000 years old when they were building the pyramids. I trust that it is legally protected.
135 degrees F – thats hot.
Interesting list
What stories do you think that tree can tell? Amazing. And the new header is wonderful, too! Ruth is one of my favorite stories; her devotion is inspiring.
Happy TT! Thanks for visiting!!!

Love the facts, considering that I will be (hopefully) moving to the Redding area of California soon!
Happy TT
I’ve always wanted to see a redwood tree!
I so love these informative TT’s!! GREAT JOB!!!!!!
Oh wow, the info about the redwood tree simply astounded me — 12,000 years old. A beautiful, venerable old tree.
And I laughed at Mel Blanc having “That’s All Folks!” on his headstone — that’s perfect!
And I didn’t know that California spent one month as a republic — fascinating!
Thanks for a fun and informative list — I learned a lot from it.
Happy TT, and I appreciate you stopping by mine!
My family is in California and just moved from LA out to the high desert in Hesperia. Seeing #10, I’m glad they moved!
Great info — really enjoyed it!
Thanks for visiting mine!
oooo!! good list!
Ive never been to California, but Ive always wanted to visit. Now I want to go even more!
I love interesting lists like this one. 135 degrees… I will have to remember that the next time I complain about it hitting over 90 degrees where I live.
Thurday Thirteen: Happy St. Francis Day!
Since it’s Saint Francis of Assisi’s Day today…

Wow———–YOU amaze me! I loved it.
Thanks for that! I learned plenty.

What a great TT! I love learning new things, and this taught me a bunch.
[...] Ellen A great TT that teaches you some fun facts about California (and shocking ones too!) [...]
Great list! I’m from California as well.
The fortune cookie one floored me. I did not know that.
how cool.
my 13 is up
My last family holiday with my parents and younger brother was to San Fransisco. What a great place! Thank you so much for bring back some lovely memories. My TT is all about memories this week. If you fancy dropping by, I’d love to hear what you thought of it. You can find it here.
If one day I’d go to the US it will definitely be California!
I love that header! I’m gonna go over there and check out her site! Thanks for sharing the info!
Great TT. I enjoyed reading this. My birthplace was in Oregon, and I’ve had the priviledge of seeing the great sequoias. They are totally awesome! So let’s see, if above ground you only see an actual one-third of a tree, just imagine the depths of those tree’s roots! That amazes me!
I knew that monarchs migrated somewhere, I just couldn’t remember where — thanks for reminding me! I also remember studying about the Gold Rush in every history class I ever took in school. One teacher remarked to our class that the East coast studies the Civil War, year after year, and the West coast studies the Gold Rush, year after year.
Now that my kids have gone thru school here on the east coast, I can second his opinion! Cuz they don’t know much about the Gold Rush!
Have a great weekend!
Huh, I learned a lot about reading this. Especially about Fortune Cookies.
I love Mel Blanc’s voices…
ILOVECalifornia I have only visited twicw but the air, ocean mtns and attitude just spoke to me I did not know that about Fort Cookies , San Francisco?
Very interesting facts…particularly #3! That’s OLD!
What a fun list. Never been to Cali, but want to go now

I’m a CA native living in the desert of Arizona, who’s also homesick for the beach!!
Happy TT!
We went to San Francisco in 2000. On our trip we took a tour of Chinatown. We went to a factors where fortune cookies are made. The lady asked if we wanted regular or sexy fortune cookies. (We bought the ’sexy’ ones…) We still joke about that! Great post!
interesting list! happy TT! i miss cali so much. i just moved to DC from the LA area 2 months ago. we actually lived right by the fault line that you mentioned (we were about an hour east of LA)! scary!!!
I love California!
Interesting bunch of information
I actually did know about the fortune cookies, so I felt very smart! Happy TT
THanks for the history — and Mel Blanc’s headstone is priceless.
I’ve never been to California, but I would love to see the sites someday.
Thanks for visiting my TT!
Would love to visit one day, particularly southern California as I have not been yet! Happy TT
I love California! My brother lives in Oakland and I have walked across the Golden Gate…twice. That’s a long bridge!
I’ve visited California a few times and my brother lived in San Francisco for 10 years – I learned a lot from your list!
Hmmm…I find #10 a little troubling. I think I’ll have to mentally block that one.
Great job at listing a nice array of what California has to offer. It’s got a little bit for everyone, doesn’t it? I saw General Sherman a couple of years ago. Just amazing!
That tree is very cool! Fun list! Thanks for visiting my TT.
FANTASTIC list Ellen. Aren’t the redwoods just amazing? They leave me speechless. Lovely list!
