
Here are 13 facts about New York…
1. George Washington’s inauguration took place on April 30, 1789, in New York City. The Big Apple enjoyed a brief stint as the nation’s capitol from 1789-1790.
2. NYC is the largest city in the U.S. According to the 2000 census, 8,008,278 people live in its five buroughs.
3. The index finger of the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor is eight feet long.

4. The Empire State Building took 7 million man-hours, 1 year and 45 days (including Sundays and holidays) to build. It changes colors for special occasions and holidays and its lights are turned off on foggy nights and during bird migration season.

5. Some famous New Yorkers: Lucille Ball, Steven Spielberg, Mickey Rooney, James Cagney, John D. Rodkefeller, Norman Rockwell, Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt and Walt Wiltman.

6. Who was the real Typhoid Mary? She was Mary Mallon, an Irish immigrant cook who infected 22 New Yorkers with typhoid fever from 1900-1907. When she was finally tracked down, she hid behind a row of trashcans. For the sake of public health she was kept in isolation until her death.

7. New York City’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world. Under construction since 1892, the building is still only two-thirds complete.

8. Four mountain ranges grace New York state’s topography: the Adirondack, Catskill, Shawangunk, and Taconic.

9. There are more Irish in New York City than in Dublin, more Italians than in Rome, and more Jews than in Tel Aviv.
10. Broadway, one of the world’s longest streets, run 150 miles, from Bowling Green in lower Manhattan to the state capitol in Albany.

11. The state insect of New York is the ladybug.

12. America’s first vending machines were installed on New York City subway platforms in 1888. They sold chewing gum.
13. In 1905, Gennaro Lombardi opened the first pizzeria in North America on New York City’s Spring Street.

I love New York. The most exciting place on earth! I’ll never live anywhere but Chicago, but New York will always be my dream vacation destination. BTW … re: #9 — Chicago has more Poles than Warsaw.

I’m always interested in stuff about the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. I didn’t know it took that long to build. I’ve also never been there (or to the statue) and have been meaning to go, but never got around to it.
That is a huge list of amazing things! How cool! I hadn’t known ANY road not an interstate left New York City. And the picture of Typhoid Mary’s grave… really neat.

I’ve always wanted to visit New York and I feel like I had a mini online vacation – such interesting facts. I never knew that about Typhoid Mary. The Empire State building is beautiful, good to know they are conscientious about migrating birds.

I knew a little of that, but not very much. That is a very interesting set of facts about New York. I loved the photos of the mountains—how gorgeous—and the adorable ladybug.

Just as an FYI, the stagehands are on strike which is affecting Broadway, and the writers strike is affecting shows like Lettermen. The Macy’s parade and weather was outstanding!
